Statistics
Currently there is a poverty of accurate brain injury statistics nationally and provincially within BC. We will look at incidence and prevalence statistics for traumatic brain injuries. Incidence is described as the number of new brain injuries that occur within a defined population. Prevalence is the number of people living with a brain injury within the defined population. According to estimated incidence and prevalence statistics provided through BABC, there is:

Incidence:
  • Approximately 190,000 TBI's survived every year in Canada
  • Approximately 24,000 TBI's survived every year in BC

    Prevalence:
  • Approximately 590,000 TBI's in Canada
  • Approximately 75,000 TBI's in BC
  • * these statistics were provided by BABC (2002) based on Canadian populations, and extrapolated from US statistics.
